Black Acre Brewing began as a homebrewing group of five homebrewers: Jordan Gleason, Matt Johnson, Holly Miller, Justin Miller, and Steve Ruby. The five began brewing together in 2009 after Jordan and Justin discovered they both were homebrewers during a legal writing class in their first year of law school. Shortly after, Justin’s wife, Holly Miller, and Jordan’s roommate, Matt Johnson, along with fellow law student Steve Ruby, joined the team to become the future owners of Black Acre Brewing Co.
The five began growing fresh hops in Justin and Holly’s backyard and filling up four refrigerators with 15 five-gallon kegs. In February 2011, they opened Black Acre Brewing Co. in Irvington. They brewed their first batch of beer for the company in April, 2012. The name Black Acre derives from a legal term, and many beer names have similar law references.
Black Acre Brewing Company opened its doors in 2012 with a three barrel electric brewing system and taproom. Located in the historic Irvington neighborhood of Indianapolis, Black Acre has tried to becoming both a community meeting space and a place to showcase an ever-changing variety of beers.
In 2015, the brewery expanded to a second production brewing facility two blocks south of its taproom. This allowed the brewery to distribute its beers around the state.
